| What Robert Moses has done... Sun, Fun, Sand and...FITNESS BODIES! Mr & Ms Jones Beach, USA by Greg Sushinsky What Robert Moses has done! When the visionary, controversial, legendary city planner Robert Moses re-shaped the face of New York City and ventured out to Long Island to make it one with the island of Manhattan, whether New Yorkers wanted it that way or not, he couldn’t have foreseen what his imagination would give birth to. Or did he? The explosion of city life onto the Island that Moses had in his mind would need an outlet for diversion, a safety valve for residents to escape, however briefly, the pressures of city life, to have a place to relax, refresh and entertain themselves. In his mind, and his mind alone, he saw the massive spit of land that is now Jones Beach State Park, as that place, and with his will, his political might, and some would say, his managerial stealth, he made it come to pass. The ocean front experience that some might now take for granted stands as a unique monument to the creative vision of one of the most dynamic urban planners, with the vivid testament to this the constant and exuberant use of the beach and the park. The limitless vista of the ocean provides the backdrop for swimming, sunning –and every other worthwhile beach activity that anyone has done or can dream of. And now we have an addition, after so many years of ordinary pleasures, the excitement of a bodybuilding and fitness extravaganza. This event is fashioned by fitness pioneer Dan Lurie, who aims to bring a flavor of “Muscle Beach East” to the spectacle of fit bodies which will blend right into the sun and fun of the oceanfront. Robert Moses shaped up the beach, as Dan Lurie shapes up the people. A winning combination. One of the hallmarks of Jones Beach, through its historic evolution as a place of recreation and as a getaway destination yet so nearby, at hand to millions of enthusiastic city dwellers, is the creative use of its terrain. Along with the fun activities, there is the marriage of entertainment with helping others, as the United Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County stands to be the beneficiary of the enthusiastic, responsive crowd for the body contests. The bodybuilding and fitness event is being held in conjunction with the UCPN efforts to raise additional funds for their considerable services.
